My name is Vanessa Henry and I am from the Onondaga Nation, Turtle Clan. I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario. I am a Mother to three, Brittany, TIffany, and Bradlee. I am also Grandmother to Jonathan. I have four sisters and I am first generation survivor of Residential School. My Father attended the "Mush Hole" and growing up in the city I was unaware of who I was or where I come from. I was told I was Native and I should be proud of who I am, but I didn't even know what being "Native" meant. I have been doing my own learing about culture for the past 14 years, since my youngest child was 2 years old. It started with getting an education and learning about culture that has changed me and my families lives for the betterment of breaking the cycle of inter-generational trauma.
